Strauch Sektmanufaktur — Organic Sparkling, Now Without the Alcohol

Germany's only certified-organic sparkling-wine manufactory, handcrafted in Osthofen since the family's roots in 1545.

About the Winery

In the small wine town of Osthofen, in the Wonnegau corner of Rheinhessen, the Strauch family has been growing wine for a very long time — their Dalbergerhof estate dates back to 1545. Today the family farms around 25 hectares, fully organic and vegan, and turns that fruit into something rare: handcrafted sparkling wine made entirely from their own organically grown base wines.

What makes the house genuinely singular is its certification — Strauch is Germany's only certified-organic Sektmanufaktur. It is also one of the smallest and most modern, working with French champagne-cellar equipment and the traditional bottle-fermentation method. And it has become a reference point for alcohol-free sparkling: the same organic craft, the same fine bead, simply without the alcohol.

History

The first Strauch sparkling wines were made in 1979, in Osthofen, using the traditional bottle-fermentation method at the family's Dalbergerhof estate. The decisive turn came in 2011, when Isabel Strauch-Weißbach and Tim Weißbach transformed the traditional cellar into what they call Germany's smallest and most modern sparkling-wine manufactory — fitting it with the latest French champagne machinery while keeping the handcraft at its heart. The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2003, so that 100% of the base wines for the sparkling range come from the family's own organic fruit.

Both born in Rheinhessen, Isabel Strauch-Weißbach and Tim Weißbach didn't fall for sparkling wine out of nowhere — the love was already there, thanks to Isabel's parents and the family's Dalbergerhof estate. Since 2011 the two of them have run the manufactory with equal parts conviction and energy. New to the range? The Blanc Pur and Rosé Pur are the perfect place to start.

The vines grow in the Wonnegau, the gently rolling southern heart of Rheinhessen, on sites such as the Mettenheimer Michelsberg. Farmed organically since 2003 — and supported under EU programmes for organic agriculture and biodiversity-friendly grassland — these are vineyards managed with the long view: cover crops, restrained yields, and healthy soils that give the base wines their freshness and finesse.

How the Alcohol-Free Range Is Made

It starts with a real sparkling base wine — organic, hand-crafted, made the traditional way. To make it alcohol-free, the base wine is gently vacuum-distilled: warmed to around 30 °C under reduced pressure so the alcohol evaporates slowly and the level drops below 0.5% vol, while the aromatics are protected by the low temperature. Because a second bottle fermentation would simply create alcohol again, the sparkle is added with fermentation-derived carbon dioxide instead. The result asks for even more care in the cellar — and keeps the fine, fresh bead Strauch is known for.

Food Pairing

An alcohol-free Sekt is, first of all, a wonderful aperitif. The crisp Blanc Pur shines alongside oysters, sushi, light starters and fresh fruit; the Rosé Pur loves brunch, summer salads, berry desserts and a sunny terrace. Both are the easy, celebratory pour when everyone deserves to toast — and everyone wants a clear head tomorrow.

Sustainability

Organic certification – Strauch Sektmanufaktur

Sustainability isn't a side note here — it's the whole point. Strauch is Germany's only certified-organic sparkling-wine manufactory (DE-ÖKO-022), farming organically and vegan since 2003, with EU support for organic agriculture and biodiversity. Through the "120-Zeilen-Club", supporters can even sponsor rows of Riesling vines and follow their season up close.
