Cognato

Elegant alcohol-free wine from South Africa — Fairtrade-certified.

The House

Alcohol-free wine from South Africa

Cognato — the name means “closely related”.

In 2018 cousins David Sommestad and Adam Malmnäs created Cognato, aiming to craft an elegant, delicious alcohol-free wine — from South Africa.

The grapes are picked fully ripe and fermented at controlled temperatures; working with Fairtrade-certified growers, the alcohol is gently removed by vacuum spinning cone, preserving aroma, flavour and structure.

History

Founded by two cousins

The name “Cognato” means “closely related” — fitting for a brand two cousins founded together in 2018. Their goal: alcohol-free wine that shows the elegance and finesse of real wine.

The People

David Sommestad & Adam Malmnäs

Two cousins with a shared idea — elegant alcohol-free wine, produced fairly and sustainably. From that kinship came the name Cognato.

Elegant wine — fair and entirely without alcohol.

Terroir

Western Cape — South Africa’s wine country

Cognato comes from South Africa’s Western Cape, the home of Chenin Blanc. A sun-rich climate and cool Atlantic breezes yield fresh, expressive wines — grown fairly.

The Craft

How Cognato is made

It starts with a complete South African wine.

01

Fully ripe grapes

Carefully picked grapes from Fairtrade growers, controlled fermentation.

02

Vacuum spinning cone

The alcohol is gently removed — aroma and structure remain.

03

Fair & low sugar

Fairtrade-certified and low in sugar — mindful enjoyment.

At the Table

How to serve it

The Chenin Blanc suits fish, salads and poultry; the Cabernet Sauvignon grilled dishes and cheese; the Sparkling is a fresh aperitif.

Conscience

Fairtrade & low sugar

Cognato works with Fairtrade-certified growers and stands for ethical, sustainable farming — and the wines are low in sugar, too.
