Let’s be honest: good alcohol-free wine is hard to find. Not because it doesn’t exist – it does, and there is more of it every year – but because it is barely visible. Supermarket shelves usually carry two or three bottles, often sweetish and closer to grape juice. Exactly the wines that gave the category its bad reputation.
The really exciting bottles often come from wineries that dealcoholise with great care – and you simply don’t come across them in everyday life. We know the consequence from many conversations: people try one disappointing bottle, conclude that “alcohol-free wine just isn’t for me” – and give up. A shame, because the good ones are genuinely good.
How our selection comes together
At Alcfree.ch, nothing goes into our range that we haven’t tasted ourselves. What counts is taste – not the label, not the name, and not the price alone.
Today our range includes around 300 alcohol-free products from more than 70 producers: white wines, red wines, rosés, sparkling wines, spirits and sparkling teas. They range from long-established wineries that have deliberately stepped into the alcohol-free world to young specialists who do nothing else.
Every wine can be ordered individually, so you can take your time finding what you like without risking a whole case.
And yet: we are far from knowing everything
As large as our selection is, it reflects only part of what is out there today. The market is moving fast. Every year brings new producers, new grape varieties and new styles, and quality is rising noticeably.
We are continuously working to broaden our range: new wineries, grape varieties we don’t carry yet, and styles we can’t offer you yet. You will always find the latest additions under New Arrivals.
That takes time, though. Every new wine has to convince us on taste, but it also has to be imported into Switzerland, cleared through customs and reliably available. Some excellent bottles are simply not (yet) available here.
Keeping the overview: NeoVina
If you want to see how diverse the world of alcohol-free wine has become, we recommend taking a look at NeoVina. The platform is a directory of alcohol-free wine and brings together an impressive number of producers and products. Its wine search lets you browse by grape or style – from Chardonnay and Riesling to Pinot Noir, rosé and sparkling wine. For a Swiss perspective, their list of the top 10 non-alcoholic red wines in Switzerland is a good place to start.
The guides are particularly helpful for getting started. We hear two questions again and again, and NeoVina answers both in detail:
- How is alcohol-free wine made? The four main methods explained.
- 0.0% or 0.5%? What the difference on the label actually means.
An overview like this is valuable for us too: it shows which producers and styles already exist – and where our selection can still grow.
Your discovery, our next wine
This is where you come in. If you discover an alcohol-free wine on NeoVina, in a restaurant or on your travels that we don’t carry yet: write to us. Tips from our customers help us a great deal to see which wines people in Switzerland are looking for. Many people discover their first really good alcohol-free wine in a restaurant – why that still happens so rarely is the subject of our article on alcohol-free wine in restaurants.
Conclusion
Good alcohol-free wine doesn’t have to be hard to find. It takes just two things: an overview of everything that’s out there – and a place where you can easily order the best bottles. We are working to make sure that place offers more and more of them in Switzerland.
